A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the city of Xigaze, located in the Xizang Autonomous Region, at 9:05 a.m. Beijing Time on Tuesday.

The earthquake has resulted in 53 confirmed fatalities and 62 injuries, according to the regional disaster relief headquarters.

In response, the China Earthquake Administration has activated a level II emergency service response and dispatched a team to the affected area to aid in relief operations.

The Xizang Autonomous Region has also issued a level II emergency response.

In a swift relief effort, central authorities have sent approximately 22,000 disaster relief items, including cotton tents, coats, quilts, and folding beds. Special materials for high-altitude and frigid conditions have also been provided.

Over 1,500 local firefighters and rescue personnel have been deployed to assist in the ongoing recovery efforts.
