A legal case is expected to be filed against a construction worker who fatally stabbed a police officer in Brgy. Pakiad, Oton, Iloilo.

The victim was identified as Police Staff Sergeant Erwin Calubayan, a member of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Iloilo, married, and a resident of Brgy. Balabag, Dumangas, Iloilo.

The suspect, identified as alias Dan, a 40-year-old construction worker from Brgy. Siniba-an, Dingle, Iloilo, is currently in custody.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Police Lieutenant Marlon Ayson, Deputy Commander of CIDG Iloilo, stated that Calubayan was on duty at the time of the incident, conducting monitoring operations in the 1st District of Iloilo as part of his role in the CIDG.

Ayson clarified that Calubayan was dispatched under their command and was fulfilling his duties.

When asked about a possible motive, Ayson refrained from commenting on allegations that jealousy led to the crime. However, an earlier report from the Oton Municipal Police Station (MPS) revealed that both the victim and the suspect were allegedly courting alias Donna.

Their first confrontation reportedly occurred at a sari-sari store, where the tragic incident ensued.

Calubayan sustained a stab wound to the right side of his abdomen and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

The suspect also suffered a gunshot wound during the altercation.

The case remains under investigation as authorities prepare to file charges against the suspect.
