The Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) has issued a public warning about the use of skin-whitening products, specifically injectable glutathione, that have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Dr. Henedina Belicena, a fellow of the PDS, raised concerns about the growing number of health and beauty salons, wellness spas, and beauty clinics offering various services aimed at lightening skin.

Dr. Belicena explained that these establishments often provide intravenous drip treatments using products such as reduced glutathione, vitamin C, and others for skin whitening. However, she emphasized that there have been no clinical trials to confirm the effectiveness of injectable glutathione for this purpose.

She further clarified that the FDA has not approved any injectable products for skin whitening in the Philippines. The only FDA-approved use of injectable glutathione is as an adjunct treatment for cisplatin chemotherapy.

The use of injectable glutathione for skin whitening may also pose serious health risks, including toxic effects on the liver, kidneys, and nervous system.

To ensure skin health and safety, Dr. Belicena urged the public to consult only with board-certified dermatologists for any skin-related concerns.
