ILOILO CITY – This Valentine’s Day, many couples in Iloilo City are choosing practicality over tradition, opting to buy rice instead of flowers.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Sterjen Fabellore, a waitress at a restaurant in Jaro, Iloilo City, shared that for her and her husband, being practical is more important than following the usual Valentine’s Day customs.

“For us, Valentine’s Day is just an ordinary day. It’s not as significant compared to how the wealthy celebrate it,” Fabellore said.

Despite financial struggles, she emphasized that love and understanding should remain the foundation of any relationship.

As a mother of three, she prioritizes her family’s needs over extravagant gifts.

Instead of going on a date, Fabellore asked her husband, a tricycle driver, for ₱500 and decided to spend it on rice rather than flowers or a fancy meal.

For many families like hers, ensuring food on the table is a more meaningful way to express love than following commercial Valentine’s Day traditions.
