Several schools in Western Visayas have started shifting to remote learning as the heat index continues to rise in the region.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Mr. Hernane Escullar Jr., spokesperson for the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6, emphasized that the health and well-being of students remain their top priority amid the extreme heat.

According to Escullar, the high temperatures are affecting students’ ability to focus on their studies, prompting some schools to temporarily suspend face-to-face classes in favor of alternative learning modes.

It was learned that there are around 1.9 million secondary students across the region, with 1.7 million enrolled in public schools.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara has earlier directed field offices and schools to implement preventive measures, including adjusting class schedules, utilizing alternative delivery modes when necessary, improving classroom ventilation, and setting up hydration stations.

Schools have also been advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, limit physical activities, and hold them in shaded or covered areas. Additionally, students and school personnel are allowed to wear light and comfortable uniforms to cope with the extreme weather conditions.
