ILOILO CITY – Acne, a common skin condition affecting people of all ages, can cause emotional distress and lasting skin damage if left untreated, according to Dr. Elvie Dofitas, a board-certified dermatologist from the Philippine Dermatological Society.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo Iloilo, Dr. Dofitas explained that acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the formation of whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. While it is most prevalent among teenagers, acne can persist into adulthood, especially among women due to hormonal changes.
She emphasized that early treatment is crucial in preventing severe acne scars and complications. “If self-care remedies don’t work, it’s important to consult a dermatologist. Persistent acne could also be a sign of an underlying health condition,” she warned.
Common Triggers and Myths
Dr. Dofitas identified several factors that can trigger or worsen acne, including hormonal fluctuations, certain medications, stress, and diet. She noted that while some studies suggest high-carbohydrate foods may contribute to breakouts, further research is needed.
She also debunked common acne myths, clarifying that eating chocolate or greasy food does not directly cause acne. “Acne is not caused by poor hygiene. In fact, excessive scrubbing or using harsh skincare products can irritate the skin and make it worse,” she explained.
When to Seek Medical Help
Dr. Dofitas advised individuals experiencing persistent, severe, or painful acne to seek professional treatment. She also cautioned against certain over-the-counter acne products that may cause severe allergic reactions, as warned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Acne, she said, is not just a cosmetic concern but a medical condition that should be managed properly. “Early intervention is key. With the right treatment, acne can be controlled, and long-term skin damage can be prevented,” she concluded.
For those struggling with acne, consulting a certified dermatologist remains the best course of action to achieve clearer and healthier skin.
