Five airport police officers assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) have been suspended over their alleged involvement in an extortion scheme targeting taxi drivers.
This was confirmed by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon, who has ordered the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to launch an investigation into the matter.
According to Dizon, the suspension will be followed by immediate proceedings that may lead to the termination of the involved personnel.
The action comes after a taxi driver filed a complaint, claiming that airport police were demanding 40 percent of their daily earnings. The driver alleged that those who failed to comply were harassed and denied entry into the airport premises.
Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation and reiterated their commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within the airport.
