The Senate has voted to reject a motion filed by Senate Minority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III seeking to postpone deliberations on the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a 19-5 vote on Tuesday, the chamber opted to proceed with the motion of Senator Rodante Marcoleta to dismiss the complaint, effectively sidelining Sotto’s appeal to wait for the final ruling of the Supreme Court on the matter before taking any legislative action.
Only five senators—all from the minority bloc—supported Sotto’s move. These included Senators Risa Hontiveros, Loren Legarda, Migz Zubiri, Ping Lacson, and Sotto himself.
With the Senate’s decision, the chamber is now poised to vote on Marcoleta’s motion to dismiss the impeachment case, potentially putting an end to the proceedings against Vice President Duterte.
The impeachment complaint has sparked intense debate in recent weeks, with minority senators calling for restraint until the Supreme Court’s decision, while majority members have pushed to resolve the matter within the Senate.
