At least 11 people, including three children, were killed when a residential building collapsed in the northeastern part of New Delhi on Saturday, according to local media reports and authorities.
The incident occurred in a district primarily inhabited by laborers. Rescue teams managed to pull 11 survivors from the rubble, who were rushed to the hospital. Five of them remain under treatment as of latest reports.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the bereaved families, stating in a social media post, “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones.”
President Droupadi Murmu also expressed deep sorrow over the incident, mourning the loss of lives, particularly among women and children.
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been officially determined. However, Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra pointed to alleged corruption within the local government—run by a rival political party—as a contributing factor in the proliferation of illegal constructions.
Reports described the four-story building as having “collapsed like a house of cards,” a tragic but common occurrence in urban India, where many residents live in poorly built and unauthorized structures.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collapse.
