International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan has temporarily stepped aside from his duties as an external investigation into allegations of misconduct against him is underway.
In an official statement released by the ICC, Deputy Prosecutors Nazhat Shameem Khan and Mame Mandiaye Niang will jointly lead the Office of the Prosecutor in the interim to ensure continued operations.
The ICC’s governing body announced the launch of the external probe following a formal complaint, which Khan has firmly denied.
Khan, a prominent figure in international justice, made headlines last year when he sought arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three senior Hamas leaders.
He is also at the helm of the ICC’s investigation into alleged crimes against humanity involving former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained.
