Iloilo City, Philippines – Mayor Jerry Treñas has declared the suspension of face-to-face classes across both public and private schools in the city, from preschool to senior high school, starting today. The decision comes in response to the extreme heat conditions currently affecting the region.
The suspension follows a recommendation from the Iloilo City Operations Center (OpCen) due to the forecasted heat index of 41°C. The heat index, which measures the apparent temperature, is expected to reach dangerous levels, with peak temperatures between 42°C and 43°C expected from noon until 4 p.m.
Mayor Treñas also urged university presidents and school heads to implement similar measures for college students.
The mayor further explained that the recommendation from the Iloilo City Operations Center suggested that the suspension should be enforced when the heat index exceeds 40°C, surpassing the previous threshold of 42°C.
An amended executive order on the suspension is set to be made public shortly.
In light of the ongoing extreme heat, Mayor Treñas advised the public to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and immediately seek help at the nearest health facility or operation center if experiencing heat-related health concerns.
