ILOILO – Municipalities in Iloilo have launched an initiative to repurpose discarded election campaign materials into eco-friendly bags, wallets, pouches, and cellphone cases.

Mitzi Peñaflorida, Senior Environmental Management Specialist, revealed in an interview with Bombo Radyo that the project is part of the “Limpyo Eleksyon” (Clean Election) campaign.

Peñaflorida explained that the initiative aims to promote upcycling and reduce the use of single-use plastics in the market.

Executive Order No. 265, issued by Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., urges candidates, political parties, and campaign groups to properly dispose of election materials in an environmentally responsible manner.

In the 2022 elections, the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO) collected 14,886.075 kilograms (14.8 metric tons) of discarded campaign materials from 42 municipalities and Passi City. Of this, 7,180.5 kilograms of tarpaulins were deemed suitable for upcycling.
