Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy was among the 355 passengers aboard a flight that made an emergency landing at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan yesterday.
The comedian himself confirmed the incident by posting a video showing him and his family dining at a restaurant in Japan while sharing their experience.
According to Jo Koy, they were en route to Los Angeles, California when smoke filled the cabin due to an electrical fire. Following the incident, the plane conducted an emergency landing.
Jo Koy assured that everyone was safe and praised the Philippine Airlines crew for remaining calm and professional throughout the situation.
“You guys, this is the family here. We had to do an emergency landing in Tokyo, Japan,” he said in the video. “I’m gonna say this, the flight attendants on Philippine Airlines were amazing. You were amazing—above and beyond. You guys were pros.”
He added, “We are safe and we are in Tokyo, and our next flight out is in nine hours, so we’re gonna have some sake. All right, I love you guys.”
The incident involved Philippine Airlines flight PR102 bound for Los Angeles, which departed from Manila on Wednesday.
The airline later confirmed that the smoke came from one of the aircraft’s two air conditioning units.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon also confirmed that all passengers and crew were safe following the event.
It is known that Jo Koy recently visited the Philippines, including a stop in Bacolod for activities related to his foundation. He is also filming his latest Netflix special and is scheduled to perform at the Mall of Asia Arena on June 21 as part of his “Just Being Koy” tour.
