The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued a warning following an increase in volcanic ash emissions from Kanlaon Volcano. Since 11:45 AM today, dark ash has been emanating from the summit, accompanied by weak low-frequency volcanic earthquakes. The eruption has produced a dark plume approximately 1.2 kilometers high, which is drifting northwest.
The ongoing ash emissions are raising concerns for communities in Negros Occidental, particularly those located to the northwest and west of the volcano, where ashfall is expected.
PHIVOLCS has raised the alert level to 3 (magmatic unrest), signaling a heightened risk of sudden, potentially stronger explosive eruptions that could pose life-threatening hazards to nearby areas.
Residents in affected areas are urged to stay indoors to avoid inhaling ash and to protect sensitive equipment. Civil aviation authorities have also been alerted, advising pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit due to the hazards posed by volcanic ash.
PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates. Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.
