Authorities in Colombia have arrested the main suspect in the assassination attempt on Senator Miguel Uribe, a rising political figure and potential presidential candidate.
The suspect, identified as Elder Jose Arteaga—also known by the alias “El Costeño”—was apprehended on Saturday during a police operation in the western part of Bogotá. His arrest was confirmed by Colombia’s police chief and followed an international red notice issued by Interpol.
Arteaga is believed to have masterminded the June 7 attack on Senator Uribe, including supplying the firearm used by a 15-year-old minor who allegedly carried out the shooting. The senator was struck three times—twice in the head and once in the leg—and remains in critical condition after undergoing multiple surgeries.
According to law enforcement, Arteaga has a criminal history spanning over 20 years. He now faces several charges, including aggravated attempted homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and exploitation of a minor for criminal activity.
Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a reward of 3 billion pesos (approximately $750,000) for information leading to the capture of other individuals behind the plot. Authorities are working closely with international partners from the United States, United Kingdom, and United Arab Emirates as the investigation continues.
Senator Uribe, 39, is a member of the Democratic Center Party and a prominent figure in Colombia’s political opposition. He hails from a well-known political family—his grandfather previously served as President of Colombia.
The attack has intensified national concerns over political violence as the country moves closer to the next presidential elections.
