Malacañang has called the reports that US President Donald Trump snubbed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during their encounter at the Vatican funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday “fake news.”
In a statement, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro clarified that based on video footage and photos obtained, there was no such snubbing incident.
Castro’s statement came in response to circulating reports suggesting that Trump had ignored President Marcos during their brief meeting at the event.
Photos released by the Presidential Communications Office show the two leaders engaged in a brief conversation. However, Castro noted that the specifics of their discussion remain unclear.
“We are still unaware of the details of their conversation,” Castro said, adding that she would inquire further once she has the chance to speak with President Marcos.
In addition to Trump, President Marcos was also seen having a brief exchange with former US President Joe Biden during the event.
President Marcos and First Lady Liza Marcos are expected to return to the Philippines today after attending Pope Francis’ funeral in Vatican City on Saturday. Castro could not confirm any other activities the President may have engaged in while in Rome.
