𝗜𝗟𝗢𝗜𝗟𝗢 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗬 – Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas has called on the public to avoid throwing garbage into the Iloilo River as the city prepares for the upcoming Dinagyang Festival 2025. With expectations of a large influx of visitors to the city, the mayor emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal to maintain the cleanliness of the river.
In a public statement, Mayor Treñas shared his commitment to preserving the river’s beauty, recounting efforts that began during his time as a congressman:
“When I was a congressman, I saw the need to address the siltation of the Iloilo River. I sought funding for dredging, but DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson suggested to me that he would send a dredger from the Bureau of Equipment of the department to do the dredging. However, none was available at that time. Senator Franklin Drilon supported this plan by securing funds for two brand-new Water Master dredging machines from Finland, to be procured by the DPWH. These machines are fully dedicated to the Iloilo River, Dungon Creek, and other waterways.”
The mayor noted that the successful dredging of the river has led to the establishment of boat tours, showcasing the river’s improved condition. The City Agriculture’s Office, General Services Office (GSO), and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) continue to maintain the river’s cleanliness with motorized boats.
The mayor also highlighted the role of the Iloilo Esplanade, which has become a symbol of the city’s environmental care and progress, thanks to the efforts of Senator Franklin Drilon.
As the Dinagyang Festival draws closer, Mayor Treñas urged residents and visitors to take responsibility in maintaining the river’s cleanliness:
“As the Dinagyang Festival nears, I urge everyone: please don’t throw garbage into the river. Let’s preserve its beauty for the festival and for future generations. Let’s protect the Iloilo River and our city. Buligay kita para ma-mentinar ang kantinlo sang aton Iloilo River!”
The mayor’s appeal calls for collective action to ensure that Iloilo’s prized river remains a symbol of pride, cleanliness, and progress for all.
