Dr. Ryndell G. Alava, Chairperson of the Comprehensive Brain and Spine Center at Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC), recently shared insights about the increasing number of stroke cases in the region.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Dr. Alava emphasized that stroke is a sudden and severe condition that can strike without warning or prior symptoms. The occurrence of a stroke is dependent on which part of the brain loses its blood supply, affecting its function.

Dr. Alava also outlined several risk factors associated with stroke, including hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, heart failure, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

He pointed out that the majority of stroke victims are individuals aged 50 and above. However, he expressed concern over the rising number of stroke cases in younger adults, particularly those between 30 to 40 years old. Dr. Alava attributed this trend to the increasing prevalence of risk factors among the youth.

The medical expert also stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for stroke victims. He urged that patients be brought to hospitals equipped with facilities capable of handling stroke-related emergencies for the best chance of recovery.
