Authorities are preparing to file murder charges against a construction worker who fatally stabbed a police officer in Barangay Pakiad, Oton, Iloilo.
The victim was identified as Police Staff Sergeant Erwin Calubayan of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Iloilo and a resident of Barangay Balabag, Dumangas, Iloilo.
The suspect, identified as alias Dan, 40, a construction worker from Barangay Siniba-an, Dingle, Iloilo, is currently under hospital arrest after sustaining a gunshot wound during the incident.
According to Patrolman Fritz Desbaro, the investigator from the Oton Municipal Police Station, the authorities will pursue a murder charge against the suspect.
The attack was deemed premeditated, and the victim was stabbed from behind.
Sergeant Calubayan suffered a stab wound on the right side of his abdomen and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation suggests that jealousy was the motive behind the crime, as both the suspect and the victim were reportedly pursuing the same woman.
Authorities continue to monitor the condition of the suspect while finalizing the case against him.
