The Department of Education (DepEd) reported that 24,648 public schools across 16 regions suspended in-person classes due to Typhoon Crising and the southwest monsoon (Habagat).

At least 1,794 classrooms were slightly damaged, 540 severely damaged, 531 totally destroyed, and 208 hygiene facilities were affected. A total of 131 schools is being used as evacuation centers.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara visited flood-hit schools in Malabon and Navotas to assess damage and discuss repairs.

Meanwhile, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) opposed DepEd’s plan for Saturday make-up classes, saying it adds stress and contradicts the agency’s own work-life balance policy.

TDC urged DepEd to use buffer days in the school calendar instead and reminded officials not to require academic work in calamity-hit areas.
