CEBU, Philippines — The Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) has launched efforts to locate Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, after photos surfaced online showing him walking along a street in Cebu.

According to the PRA, its Cebu office has been tasked to lead the investigation and search following reports of Markle Sr.’s presence in the area.

Initial information indicates that the 80-year-old American has been residing in a modest apartment in Cebu, paying approximately £500 (around PHP 38,500) per month. He is reportedly being cared for by his 58-year-old son, Thomas Markle Jr.

The PRA confirmed that it had previously verified the residence of the father and son, a requirement for foreign nationals under the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) program. However, the two have not applied for the visa.

PRA General Manager and CEO Roberto Zozobrado stated that the agency currently has no information on the pair’s exact whereabouts. As a result, he has directed the Cebu office to locate them and offer the SRRV, which would allow them to stay legally in the country under special terms.

The SRRV is a non-immigrant visa that grants foreigners multiple-entry privileges, access to government services including healthcare, and the right to invest in the Philippines.

In an interview with an international news outlet earlier this year, Thomas Markle Sr. expressed his desire to remain in Southeast Asia, citing the region’s affordability, quality healthcare, and the respectful nature of the people—especially towards the elderly. “At 80 years old, it’s time to find a peaceful place away from the drama,” he said.

Markle Sr. has been estranged from Meghan for several years, and the relationship has reportedly remained strained since her marriage to Prince Harry. He has also not met his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The PRA continues its efforts to assist in locating the Markles and hopes to provide them with appropriate support under the SRRV program.
