The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Tuesday reiterated its warning to the public to stay out of the permanent danger zones (PDZ) of active volcanoes, even if they appear to have calmed down.

PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol emphasized the continued threat of sudden eruptions from volcanoes such as Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon and Mt. Kanlaon in Negros.

This comes after Mt. Bulusan erupted for 24 minutes on Monday, sending ash into nearby communities and prompting authorities to raise its alert status to Level 1. Despite seeming to quiet down, the volcano still recorded 89 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, indicating ongoing unrest.

Meanwhile, Mt. Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 3. Although sulfur dioxide emissions and volcanic quakes have not increased recently, PHIVOLCS cautioned that the area around the volcano is still hazardous.

The agency has set the permanent danger zone radius at 4 kilometers for Mt. Bulusan and 6 kilometers for Mt. Kanlaon.

PHIVOLCS continues to monitor these volcanoes closely and advises residents and local governments to remain vigilant.
