Sandra Cam, a former board member of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and a controversial figure known for exposing illegal gambling operations, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2025. She was 64.

Her family confirmed her passing through a Facebook post by her son, who wrote:
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved mother, Sandra Abaño Martinez-Cam, who was called to join our Creator on April 10, 2025.”

Cam gained national attention in 2005 when she admitted to being a former “jueteng” bagwoman and became a whistleblower, revealing corruption involving government officials and illegal gambling operations. Her bold stance earned her several honors, including the “Dangal ng Bayan” award and the title “Natatanging Filipina na Sumusulong sa Pagtulong at Paglaban sa Korapsyon” for her courage and commitment to truth.

In 2020, Cam was charged in connection with the killing of former Masbate Vice Mayor Charlie Yuson III. The case was dismissed in 2023.

Under the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Cam was appointed to the PCSO board, where she continued to advocate for transparency in public service.

Though her life was marked by both controversy and commendation, Cam’s transformation from a figure in illegal gambling to an anti-corruption advocate left a significant imprint on the nation’s political landscape.
