Senator Imee Marcos has called for an urgent Senate investigation into the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, raising concerns over whether due process was followed in the high-profile case.
Marcos, who chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, issued a statement on Monday emphasizing the need to scrutinize the involvement of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Duterte’s arrest.
“As chairperson of the Senate committee on foreign relations, I am calling for an urgent investigation into the arrest of former President Duterte, an issue that has deeply divided the nation,” Marcos said.
The former president’s arrest, which occurred days earlier, has sparked political tensions and public debate, with supporters questioning the legal basis and the extent of international intervention.
The Senate probe is expected to examine whether local authorities complied with legal protocols and whether Duterte’s rights were upheld throughout the process.
Further details on the Senate inquiry are expected to be released in the coming days.
