Two people were killed while five others were injured in a shooting incident that occurred inside Florida State University (FSU), authorities confirmed.

FSU Chief of Police Jason Trumbower said the suspect was apprehended after being shot by responding officers. He is currently being treated in the hospital.

The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a deputy with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.

Initial investigations suggest that the firearms used in the attack may have been taken from his mother’s workplace at the sheriff’s office. Authorities also noted that Ikner had close ties to the office, having previously participated in some of its training programs.

Police recovered a handgun and a shotgun from the suspect inside the university’s student union office. Another firearm was also found in his vehicle.

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack.

As a result of the incident, the university has suspended all classes and campus activities for two days.

FSU President Richard McCullough stated that the university will provide assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured victims.

Florida State University, located in Tallahassee, has an enrollment of more than 42,000 students.
