Members of the Filipino community in the United States have expressed disappointment over several statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

This comes just as Trump took office as the 47th president of the United States.

According to Bombo Gemma Riccio, an international correspondent based in the U.S., the community disagreed with Trump’s comments on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community, and immigrants.

Regarding DEI, many Filipinos hoped for more support, especially as it relates to equal treatment. They felt that Trump’s stance failed to recognize the importance of diversity in American society.

The Filipino community was also unsettled by Trump’s statement that he only recognizes men and women, overlooking the existence and rights of the LGBT community, which includes a significant number of individuals in the U.S.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised over Trump’s plans to restrict and eliminate legal immigration. Many fear that this would create challenges for immigrants, particularly those seeking opportunities in the country.

Local advocates warn that if these policies are fully implemented, they could lead to significant disruption and unrest across the U.S.
