A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the ocean off the coast of Ecuador, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremor occurred at a depth of 23 kilometers beneath the seabed.
Authorities reported that at least 20 people were injured and several buildings sustained damage, particularly in the city of Esmeraldas, one of the hardest-hit areas.
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa assured the public that aid and emergency assistance will be delivered promptly to affected residents.
Emergency response teams have been mobilized as aftershocks remain a possibility.
