Bandar Abbas, Iran — At least 40 people have been confirmed dead and more than 1,200 others injured following a massive explosion at the Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas on Saturday, April 26. State media reported that a fire continues to rage more than 24 hours after the incident.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian visited the site on Sunday to personally assess the situation and meet with victims. He assured that the government would provide assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured. President Pezeshkian also ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion.
According to officials, the explosion may have been triggered by a fire in a chemical storage facility. The Department of Defense strongly denied any connection to military equipment.
Due to the thick smoke and severe air pollution, classes and office work in the city have been suspended. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and wear face masks for their safety.
Meanwhile, countries such as Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, and India, along with other international organizations, have extended their condolences and offered assistance.
Monday has been declared a National Day of Mourning in Iran, while the Hormozgan province will observe three days of mourning.
