A 52-year-old pedestrian was killed in a tragic accident involving a modernized jeep in Barangay Atabayan, Tigbauan, Iloilo, at past 7:00 PM last night. The victim, identified as Pablo Titular Malaga, a single fisherman and resident of the barangay, was struck while crossing the road.

The driver of the jeep, 40-year-old Kim Andrew Fariolan Tunay, a married man from Barangay Banuyao, Miag-ao, Iloilo, surrendered himself to authorities at the Oton Municipal Police Station.

According to Police Captain Alfred Mansoy, Chief of the Tigbauan Municipal Police Station, the jeep was en route from Miag-ao and was headed toward Iloilo City with several passengers onboard. Authorities revealed that Malaga crossed the road away from the designated pedestrian lane and in an area where the lighting was poor, which may have contributed to the incident.

Malaga sustained fatal injuries to his body and head, leading to his death. Meanwhile, the driver is currently in the custody of the Tigbauan Police.

In response to the incident, UP Visayas expressed its condolences to the family of Mr. Malaga. The university also announced that students from UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI), who were in the jeep, will undergo a debriefing session with counselors from the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to help them cope with the traumatic event.

The families of both the victim and the driver are scheduled to meet later today to discuss the incident further.
