Nakibot kag nadismaya ang Department of Justice (DOJ) sa desisyon sang Timor-Leste Court of Appeal nga balibadan ang extradition request sang Pilipinas para mapapauli diri sa pungsod si anay Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr.
Nagapangatubang si Teves sang multiple murder cases lakip na ang kaso sa pagsalakay sa balay kag pagpatay kay former Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo kag iban pa sadtong 2023.
Suno sa justice department, nasorpresa sila sa desisyon bangud duha ka beses na nga nagpabor ang korte sang Timor Leste sa Philippine Government bag-o nagliso ang desisyon kag ginpaboran naman ang apelar ni Teves.
“It is peculiar that after having twice decided in favor of extradition—first in June 2024 and again in December 2024—the Timor-Leste Court of Appeal has now reversed its stance, taking a complete 180-degree turn to reject the Philippines’ extradition request,” suno sa DOJ.
Una nga gin-aprubahan sang korte ang extradition request sang June 2024, apang ginkwestyon sang kampo ni Teves ang proseso gani nga nagpatigayon liwat sang hearing.
Disyembre sang amo man nga tuig, ginpaguwa liwat ang desisyon pabor gihapon sa pagpapauli sa former congressman diri sa Pilipinas, apang nag-apelar naman ang kampo sini.
Pahayag pa sang DOJ, may seryoso nga concerns sa hinali nga paglain sang desisyon subong, kag magapangayo sang klaripikasyon ang Pilipinas kun ano ang nangin basehan sang amo nga desisyon.
“Allowing him to evade justice would be the height of injustice, not only to the victims and their families but to the integrity of the rule of law,” suno sa DOJ.
Nagpasalig man sang ahensya sa publiko nga himuon sang gobyerno ang tanan nga legal remedies para mabalik sa Pilipinas si Teves.
Sa pihak nga bahin, nalipay naman ang kampo ni Teves kag gintawag pa ini sang iya legal counsel bilang “triumph of the rule of law.”
“The decision… denying the request for extradition of Rep. Arnolfo Teves to the Philippines to face trumped up charges fabricated by the oppressive and dictatorial Marcos government, is a triumph of the rule of law, and an indictment of the kind of government we currently have,” base sa statement sang former lawmaker.
“A government who ignores the Constitution and the laws of the Republic in the brazen desire to silence political dissent and destroy the legitimate political opposition,” dugang sini.
10 ka counts sang murder, 14 counts sang frustrated murder, kag apat ka counts sang attempted murder sa idalom sang Revised Penal Code ang ginaatubang ni Teves. Ginpanginwala naman sang anay mamalidha ini nga mga alegasyon batok sa iya.
Gindesignar man siya anay bilang terorista sa idalom sang Anti-Terrorism Council bangud sang gina-alegar nga mga pagpamatay sa Negros Oriental.
