Manila, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended the driver’s license of a motorist for 90 days following a tragic vehicular accident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) that claimed two lives and injured two others.

The victims of the incident included a 28-year-old man and a 5-year-old child, both of whom died on the spot. Two other individuals sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Under the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013, drivers involved in road accidents are required to undergo chemical testing, including drug screening and, if necessary, confirmatory tests to determine the presence of alcohol or illegal substances in their system.

Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II confirmed that a show-cause order has been issued to the driver involved. He also urged the driver to voluntarily surrender his license as soon as possible.

According to police reports, the driver admitted that he restarted his vehicle just after a passenger had alighted, not noticing another vehicle passing in front of him—leading to the fatal crash.

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon stated that there was no intent on the part of the driver to cause harm, as he was merely dropping off a passenger at the airport. Dizon added that authorities are still reviewing additional CCTV footage and that the driver will continue to undergo drug testing.

The New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC), in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Security, is continuing its investigation into the incident.

As of now, normal operations at the Departure Area have resumed, and the injured victims have been given appropriate medical assistance.
