Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Nicolas Torre III has announced that overweight police officers will face dismissal from service if they fail to meet the required weight standards within one year.
According to Torre, Section 30 of Republic Act No. 6975, also known as the Department of the Interior and Local Government Act of 1990, outlines the general qualifications for appointment to the PNP. One requirement is that a police officer’s weight must not exceed or fall below the standard by more than five kilograms, depending on their height, age, and sex.
Torre explained that under PNP guidelines, officers who are outside the standard weight will be given six months to one year to achieve a normal weight. Failure to do so will result in their dismissal from service.
“For those with medical conditions, they may either face a ‘complete disability discharge’ or be reassigned to office duties,” Torre added.
The PNP leadership emphasized that maintaining physical fitness is crucial for law enforcement personnel, not only for their health but also for effective performance of their duties.
