Iran has confirmed it carried out a missile strike on the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a major U.S. military installation, in retaliation for American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.
The announcement was made late Monday (local time) through Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. According to the statement, the number of missiles launched matched the number of bombs dropped by the United States, which Iran said was a deliberate signal to avoid escalating the conflict into a wider war.
“In accordance with our commitment to regional stability, we chose a proportional and restrained response,” the statement read. “The Al Udeid Air Base was selected specifically because it is located away from densely populated areas, in order to minimize civilian casualties.”
The missile strike marks a significant escalation in tensions between Tehran and Washington, raising concerns about broader instability in the Gulf region. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the U.S. or Qatari authorities.
Further responses from both sides are awaited as the international community calls for restraint and diplomatic resolution to the growing conflict.
