YOKOHAMA, JAPAN – Dr. Paul Caesar M. Flores, a native of Pavia, Iloilo, has been honored with the President’s Award and Dean’s Award at Yokohama National University in Japan. The awards recognize his outstanding academic performance and contributions in the field of Earth Science.

Dr. Flores, who completed his Doctor of Science in Earth Science, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you, Lord, for the awards.”

College: University of the Philippines Diliman (B.S. Geology)

Master’s: Marine Science, University of the Philippines Diliman

Doctorate: Doctor of Science in Earth Science, Yokohama National University (MEXT Scholarship, Japan Government)

Journey to Japan
In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Dr. Flores shared that he first participated in Japan’s Sakura Science Program in 2020, just before the COVID-19 lockdown. The program, which invites foreign scholars, is run by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

Through this program, he made connections with Japanese scientists, which later led to his MEXT scholarship, covering his tuition and providing a stipend for his doctoral studies.

Dr. Flores, whose family roots trace back to Jibao-an, Pavia (mother’s side), Lambunao (maternal hometown), and Guimaras (father’s side), hopes to inspire fellow Filipinos to pursue opportunities in international scientific research.
