The Philippine National Police has warned the public about a new version of the “Romance Scam” targeting individuals seeking love online this Valentine’s season.
According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6, scammers use dating apps and social media platforms to lure victims into romantic relationships.
However, instead of directly asking for money, they convince victims to invest in a fake cryptocurrency website.
Once the victim makes an investment, the fraudulent site disappears, and the scammer cuts off communication.
Authorities urge the public to be vigilant and cautious when engaging with strangers online, especially those who quickly build trust and discuss financial investments.
