ILOILO CITY – Mayor Jerry Treñas clarified that there will be no holiday declaration in Iloilo City on February 25, 2025, despite the commemoration of the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Treñas emphasized the importance of remembering the historic event that led to the restoration of democracy in the country.
“The EDSA People Power was a culmination of efforts to change the system of government. It is important that we honor those who fought for our democracy,” Treñas said.
However, he firmly stated that he will not be declaring February 25 as a holiday in Iloilo City.
“As the city mayor, I cannot declare it a holiday because it is not marked in the official calendar. I would be held liable if I do so,” he explained on Monday, February 24.
He also pointed out that declaring a holiday could have financial implications, particularly for workers under a “no work, no pay” policy.
Treñas further defended President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s decision to classify February 25 as a special working day, stating that it is within the president’s prerogative.
Earlier this year, the mayor suspended classes in Iloilo City for two political gatherings—the Iglesia ni Cristo’s prayer for peace rally and the proclamation rally of Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas—despite these dates not being official holidays.
