Six people have died after a plane attempted to take off from Roatan Island, located off the coast of Honduras, according to fire chief Wilmer Guerrero, who spoke to local media late Monday.
Guerrero stated that eight passengers are believed to still be inside the aircraft. Meanwhile, Roatan police chief Lisandro Muñoz confirmed that the plane crashed into the water shortly after takeoff, making rescue and recovery efforts challenging.
The aircraft, a Jetstream operated by Honduran airline Lanhsa, was carrying 17 people, including three crew members, as reported by the country’s transport minister.
However, the exact number of fatalities was not specified.
A flight manifest shared by local media indicated that the passengers included a U.S. national, a French national, and two minors. The plane was en route to La Ceiba airport on the Honduran mainland.#
