The Department of Justice (DOJ) will act as legal counsel for government officials named as respondents in the consolidated petitions filed by the relatives of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla confirmed.
This comes after Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra recused himself from the petitions seeking to compel the government to bring Duterte back to the Philippines from the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, Remulla made a strong statement regarding Duterte’s situation, saying, “It’s a done deal.” He emphasized that discussions about the former president’s detention in the Netherlands under the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) jurisdiction have already been settled.
The Duterte family continues to push legal efforts to challenge the situation, but Remulla insisted that the matter has already been decided. His remarks have drawn mixed reactions, particularly from Duterte supporters.
