Vatican City – The body of Pope Francis was transferred this afternoon, Philippine time, to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Rome, where it will lie in state for public viewing.

The wooden coffin containing the late Pope’s remains was brought from the Papal Residence at Casa Santa Marta, where he had lived and passed away. Casa Santa Marta is located adjacent to St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pallbearers carried the coffin into the basilica, followed by a solemn procession of cardinals dressed in red vestments.

The faithful will be allowed to pay their final respects to Pope Francis starting today, Wednesday, until Friday.

The burial is scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 PM Philippine time at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, located outside the Vatican on Esquiline Hill.

Pope Francis will become the first pontiff in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. Historical accounts note that Esquiline Hill was traditionally a burial site for the poor and servants during ancient times.
