President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed Edwin Mercado as the new president and chief executive officer of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).
Mercado took his oath before the President at Malacañang on Tuesday morning, officially succeeding Emmanuel Ledesma Jr. as head of the state health insurer.
A US-trained orthopedic surgeon with 35 years of hospital management experience, Mercado has served as vice chairperson of Mercado General Hospital/Qualimed Health Network since March 2021.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1987 and later pursued advanced studies abroad, completing a Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery at Harvard Medical School in 2023.
Additionally, he holds an Executive Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina, USA.
