ILOILO CITY – A live-in couple involved in the “Rentangay” scam was arrested in Western Visayas after allegedly selling a rented vehicle instead of returning it to the owner.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office 6, said the operation was launched after a victim reported the suspects, identified as alias AJ and alias Cristine.
The victim rented out their vehicle, but instead of returning it, the suspects sold it.
The buyer of the Toyota Fortuner later reported the transaction after discovering that the documents provided were fraudulent.
Authorities then conducted an entrapment operation, which led to the couple’s arrest in Molo, Iloilo City.
According to the police, the suspects forged the vehicle owners’ signatures to facilitate illegal sales. Investigators are now looking into the possibility of other individuals being involved in the scam.
The arrested suspects will be charged with violating Republic Act No. 10883, also known as the New Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016.
