Authorities are continuing their assessment following a powerful earthquake that struck southwestern Japan last night.

According to Bombo Josel Palma, an international correspondent in Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning, predicting waves of up to one meter after the earthquake hit Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region.

However, the United States Geological Survey revised the earthquake’s magnitude from 6.9 to 6.8 and clarified that there was no longer any tsunami threat associated with the tremor.

In response to the initial warning, local authorities had urged the public to stay away from the coastline.

Several people were reported injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment at hospitals.
