Iloilo successfully defended its overall championship at the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet held in the province of Antique.
The Iloilo delegation led the secondary level with 275 medals and the Paragames with 77 medals.
In the elementary level, Iloilo saw a decline this year, losing the top spot with 166 medals, while Negros Occidental claimed first place in the category with 167 medals.
Overall, Negros Occidental finished as first runner-up, marking what is expected to be its last participation in the WVRAA Meet before it separates from Region VI following the creation of the Negros Island Region.
Aklan placed second runner-up, followed by Capiz, host province Antique, and Guimaras.
The regional sports meet lasted for one week.
At the closing ceremony held at Binirayan Gymnasium in San Jose, DepEd Regional Director Dr. Ramill B. Uytico, CESO III, congratulated the athletes for their hard work and exemplary sportsmanship.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. confirmed that athletes who won medals will receive rewards under Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-217.
This ordinance provides cash incentives to athletes, coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, and chaperones who excel in sports competitions sanctioned by the Department of Education, the Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippine Olympic Committee.
