Veracruz, Mexico – A mayoral candidate was shot dead while campaigning in Mexico, adding to the rising political violence ahead of the country’s elections.

Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez, who was running for mayor in Veracruz state, was gunned down while holding a campaign rally. The attack occurred as she was greeting supporters, when gunfire suddenly erupted, causing panic among the crowd.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing and immediately ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Authorities have yet to identify the suspects or determine the motive behind the attack.

The killing underscores growing concerns over the safety of political candidates in Mexico, especially at the local level, where drug cartel influence and political rivalries often lead to violence.
