The world is observing World Glaucoma Week from March 9 to March 15 with the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.”

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Dr. Jose Reginald Cordova, an ophthalmologist, explained that glaucoma is an eye disease that can damage the optic nerve, often due to increased fluid pressure in the eye.

Glaucoma typically develops without noticeable symptoms, making regular eye check-ups essential for early detection and treatment.

There are two types of glaucoma: open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma.

Meanwhile, Dr. Erika Bicol, another ophthalmologist, shared that glaucoma can be treated through surgery.

One surgical method involves implanting a small tube, known as a shunt, into the white part of the eye, which helps drain excess fluid and reduces eye pressure.

Another procedure, called trabeculectomy, creates a small opening in the eye to allow excess fluid to drain naturally.

Doctors continue to emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment to prevent vision loss caused by glaucoma.
