VATICAN CITY – The Vatican has reportedly begun preparations for a funeral rehearsal for Pope Francis as concerns over his deteriorating health continue to rise.

The 88-year-old Catholic leader has expressed acceptance of his condition, reportedly telling close associates, “I might not make it this time.”

Since Friday, February 14, 2025, Pope Francis has been hospitalized at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome due to severe chest pain caused by a serious respiratory infection. The Vatican confirmed that the Pope has pneumonia in both lungs, further aggravated by asthmatic bronchitis, which requires cortisone and antibiotic treatment.

In an official statement, the Vatican acknowledged the complexity of the Pope’s condition, stating: “Laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture.”

The situation is particularly concerning because Pope Francis had part of his lung removed during his youth, making his current respiratory illness even more dangerous.

Swiss Guard Under Curfew Amid Preparations

Swiss newspaper Blick reported that the Swiss Guard, responsible for the Pope’s security, has been placed under curfew as part of preparations for the possibility of his passing. The Vatican is also reportedly organizing a funeral rehearsal, a significant event in Catholic history.

Pope Francis, whose real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, has served as the head of the Catholic Church and the Vatican City State since March 13, 2013.

He has previously stated that his burial site has already been prepared in case of his death.

A Pope with Strong Ties to the Philippines

Pope Francis has a deep connection with the Philippines, being the third pontiff to visit the country.

  • Pope Paul VI was the first to visit in 1970.
  • Pope John Paul II visited twice, in 1981 and 1995.
  • Pope Francis stayed in the country for five days, from January 15 to 19, 2015, with Tacloban, Leyte, as one of his key destinations.

During his visit, he shared a meal with survivors of Typhoon Yolanda, one of the strongest typhoons in history, which devastated parts of the country on November 7, 2013.

Despite his critical health condition, the Catholic Church continues to call for prayers for Pope Francis’ recovery.
